The best hand quilting hoops / frames are designed by award winning quilter, Liuxin Newman, the THIMBLELADY. See picture below for dimentions.
The major characters and competitive advantages of Thimble Lady hoop are:
1. Ergonoic yet simple stand design to keep your back straight to avoid back pain.
2. Total hands free so you can quilt relaxed rather than lifting weight of quilt while quilting to eliminate shoulder and arm stress. The stand is balanced by the weight of your lap. And the weight of the quilt is sitting on the chair not on your lap.
3. Maximum working space without a large hoop - the 14" square shape give you more effective quilting area than a 16" round hoop of the same size. Yet, you do not need to stretch your arms quilting to avoide neck pain.
4. Wide width bands (the rings of the hoop) hold heavy layers of quilt without distorting it - you don't need to tighten the rings to pinch the quilt tightly together.
5. 360 degree free rotation mantaining a perfect tilt towards you without annoying screws to loosen or tighten up: you know what I mean if you have used any of those!
6. Light weight and collapsable - less than 2 lbs and easy to carry arount to travel.
Two models to choose from: Select Model 1 if you wear dress under Size 20; Or model 2 of the hoop if your dress size is beyond Size 20. The only difference here is the shape of the stand piece to make sure your posture is sit upright in a sitting position.

This is the only quilt hoop I recommend. I have two of them, one for each of my homes. It is easy to use, portable and holds the quilt nicely.

This is the second Thimblelady quilting hoop of the same kind that I have purchased. I bought the first some years ago and wore it out! This second hoop is different, in that the finish was not smooth (I had to get my husband to sand it as the fabric would not move over it easily)and reseal it. Other than that, I am back hand quilting as happily as ever.

Everything you want: swivels, tilts, lightweight, eliminates weight on you, well made, and best of all portable. I really enjoy quilting with this hoop. I've shared this with so many already.

I like to sit in bed while I hand quilt and this hoop is perfect for me. I love it so much I bought a second one. Also very well made. Love her thimbles too. The only thimble I use now.

The stand that connects to the model that is supposed to be used on your lap does not work if the sewer is overweight and short armed like me. However it is easily removed. I really love the hoop. It is strong and much easier to work with than a round hoop. Well worth the money.

I have not really used this hoop yet since I am still doing the Hawiian appliqué, I did try it out however. it's the first hoop where i can use both hands to quilt the "thimble lady " way. Since I have arthritus in my hands this method of quilting in conjuction with the hoop is both easy and relaxing.
The only caveat is that the hoop stand from the base to the hoop should be taller. I am 5'6' and it rests lower than needed. I will probably have my usband make a taller standing piece

I love this hoop. Makes my hand quilting so much easier without the stress. I am enjoying learning how to hand quilt and my stitches are improving. I can turn the hoop where I want it to be and the hoop handles very well. So much easier.

At the Manawatu Quilting Symposium I was the angel in an hand quilting class. A number of women were using one of these hoops. They were just what I was looking for because I had been having difficulty hand quilting the borders of large quilts. Life will be so much easier now! The hoops are also very nicely made.

Very satisfied. Shopping and shipping was quick and easy and the hoop itself is very convenient, easy to assemble, and pretty sturdy.

Checkout went smooth, hoop arrived in mail, cardboard box damaged but hoop was fine. Easy to assemble the pieces with a screwdriver and other tools, I forget what was used, I had my husband help. I've been quilting with it for a few times, it rotates easily, is a nice size, and fits in my lap comfortably. It is nice to have the quilt sitting off my lap, I think it does help with lower back pain a little bit, though I still try to get up for frequent breaks!

Received the lap quitter holder and just want to let you know how much I like it. Its far better than I expected both in size and quality of the wood. I looked at many others before deciding on yours, and I'm very happy that I ordered yours. It handles very nicely. Thank you for such a wonderful product.

This is the first time I've used a hoop, and seemed to work OK, although I struggled a bit when I got near the edge. But I like the way it rotates so easily.
Fast delivery - less than a week to the UK), and very good value compared to similar products on the market.

I really love this hoop. It fits comfortably under my thighs and rotates so that the quilt is accessible from all angles. It also lets me sit comfortably without straining my back.

I have usually machine quilted my quilts, but during a long caravan trip, I took up hand quilting. Now that I have this hoop, which is so comfortable, I am looking forward to mastering hand quilting!
